What Does GPA Stand For?

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It is the standard academic performance metric used in the United States and many other countries. Instead of expressing grades as percentages or letter grades alone, GPA converts them to a single number on a 0.0 to 4.0 scale.

The higher the GPA, the better the academic performance. A 4.0 is perfect; below 2.0 is generally considered academic probation at most institutions.

How Is GPA Calculated? Step-by-Step

GPA is a weighted average that accounts for both your grade and the number of credits each course carries.

Step 1 โ€” Convert your letter grade to points:
A = 4.0 | Aโˆ’ = 3.7 | B+ = 3.3 | B = 3.0 | Bโˆ’ = 2.7 | C+ = 2.3 | C = 2.0 | D = 1.0 | F = 0.0

Step 2 โ€” Multiply by credits (Quality Points):
English (A, 3 credits): 4.0 ร— 3 = 12.0
Math (B+, 4 credits): 3.3 ร— 4 = 13.2
History (Aโˆ’, 3 credits): 3.7 ร— 3 = 11.1

Step 3 โ€” Divide by total credits:
(12.0 + 13.2 + 11.1) รท (3 + 4 + 3) = 36.3 รท 10 = GPA: 3.63

What Is a Good GPA?

There is no single "good" GPA โ€” it depends on your goal:

  • 4.0 โ€” Perfect. Elite candidate for any program or scholarship.
  • 3.7 โ€“ 3.9 โ€” Excellent. Competitive for Ivy League and top graduate programs.
  • 3.5 โ€“ 3.6 โ€” Very good. Qualifies for most Dean's List programs and merit scholarships.
  • 3.0 โ€“ 3.4 โ€” Good. Meets standard admission requirements at most universities.
  • 2.5 โ€“ 2.9 โ€” Acceptable. Minimum for many graduate programs and some employers.
  • Below 2.0 โ€” Academic probation risk at most institutions.

The national average GPA for US college students is approximately 3.1.

Weighted vs Unweighted GPA โ€” What's the Difference?

Unweighted GPA measures your performance on a straight 4.0 scale regardless of course difficulty. An A in a regular class and an A in an AP class both count as 4.0.

Weighted GPA rewards students for taking harder courses by adding bonus points:

  • AP or IB courses: +1.0 point (A = 5.0)
  • Honors courses: +0.5 points (A = 4.5)

Most high schools report both. For college applications, admissions offices usually recalculate to an unweighted GPA to compare students fairly.
Example: A student with all A's in AP classes has a weighted GPA of 5.0 but an unweighted GPA of 4.0.

What Is Cumulative GPA?

Your cumulative GPA is the overall average of every grade you have earned since your first semester. It is calculated by dividing your total Quality Points across all semesters by your total credits taken.

Semester GPA measures only one term. Cumulative GPA is what appears on your official transcript and diploma โ€” it is the number that matters for graduate school applications, scholarships and most employers.

To calculate your cumulative GPA across multiple semesters, use the GPA calculator and enter your previous GPA and credits in the configuration section.

What Is the Dean's List GPA?

The Dean's List is a semester academic honor awarded to students with a high GPA. Requirements vary by institution but the most common threshold is a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Key points:

  • It is based on semester GPA, not cumulative GPA
  • Some schools require a minimum number of credits that semester (typically 12+)
  • It appears on your academic transcript and can help with internship and job applications

If you hit 3.5 or above in a semester using our calculator, the Dean's List badge appears automatically on your GPA card.

GPA in Other Countries โ€” US, Canada, UK and Australia

The GPA system originated in the United States but is used in different forms around the world:

  • ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ United States: Standard 4.0 scale. The most common reference globally.
  • ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Canada: Most universities use the 4.0 scale. Some institutions (University of Toronto, McGill) use a 4.3 scale where A+ = 4.3. Check your university's specific scale.
  • ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง United Kingdom: The UK does not use GPA. Instead, degrees are classified as: First Class (70%+), Upper Second / 2:1 (60โ€“69%), Lower Second / 2:2 (50โ€“59%), Third (40โ€“49%). For US grad school applications from UK students, a First Class roughly corresponds to a 3.7โ€“4.0 GPA.
  • ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ Australia: Australian universities use GPA scales of 4.0 or 7.0 depending on the institution, not the US 4.0. A High Distinction (HD) on a 7.0 scale โ‰ˆ A on the US 4.0 scale.
  • ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ Philippines: Uses the US 4.0 system directly โ€” no conversion needed.
  • ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ India: Uses a 10-point CGPA. To convert to US GPA: (CGPA รท 10) ร— 4. Example: CGPA 8.0 โ‰ˆ 3.2 US GPA.

Is 3.0 a Good GPA? Is 3.5? Is 3.7?

Is a 3.0 GPA good? Yes. A 3.0 is the B average and is the minimum for good academic standing at most US colleges. It is sufficient for many jobs and standard graduate programs but may not be competitive for selective schools.

Is a 3.3 GPA good? Yes. A 3.3 places you above the national average (~3.1) and makes you competitive for most graduate programs and employers. Not enough for very selective programs.

Is a 3.5 GPA good? Very good. A 3.5 qualifies for Dean's List at most schools, is competitive for merit scholarships, and meets the threshold for most graduate programs.

Is a 3.7 GPA good? Excellent. A 3.7 is competitive for top-tier graduate programs, Ivy League transfers and employer recognition programs. Only about 15% of students achieve this.

Is a 4.0 GPA good? Perfect on the unweighted scale. Less than 5% of students graduate with a 4.0. It opens doors to virtually every graduate program and scholarship.
